Arusha is in northern Tanznia; a very unique and vibrant city at the base of Mount Meru, about an hour away from the tallest mountain in Africa Mount Kilimanjaro. The city is surrounded by natural beauty being in close proximity to several national parks including Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Olduvai and Arusha National Parks. Interestingly, Arusha hosted the international criminal tribunal for Rwanada and sits as the de facto East African Community capital. Despite being in a conservative and religious country, Arusha is regarded as more liberal and very open to foreigners. Perhaps due to it’s historical significance in the Arusha Declaration, which gave independence to modern Tanzania from the British Commonwealth.

Every July, a new crop of recent medical school graduates arrives at teaching hospitals nationwide — including hundreds at Michigan Medicine. A steward named John Carrington was hired to oversee the hospital building, and his wife served as matron. Together they checked patients in, made sure they were fed and had clean linens and well-tended fires in the winter, and charged them room and board.
The medical care was free.

S ome projections place the peak of Covid infections in the U. If it is still going strong at the end of June, it will collide with the start of a new year in teaching hospitals across the country: July 1 is traditionally the day that new doctors who had been medical students just a month or two earlier start work as doctors. As of now, nearly 38, newly minted doctors will begin their first-year positions as residents at the beginning of July. Around the same time, doctors advancing to their second year of training will be switching hospitals, even states, as they advance in their chosen specialties.
And in specialties like ours, internal medicine, those who have competed the third year of their residencies will be moving on to pursue careers or fellowship training at other hospitals. The yearly influx of new doctors is called the July Effect because of the perception that there are more medical errors and surgical complications because of the presence of new doctors.
While that has been both supported and disputed by studies, what is true is that there is an increased need for orientation and supervision of new trainees and hypervigilance by senior attending physicians to educate and prevent medical errors. July is traditionally a less busy time for hospitals, so interns and residents can be given the attention and training they deserve.

The choices you make after college are going to affect your relationships. Intense programs like med school and law school will change the dynamic you have with your significant other. As will certain jobs. Now, as her boyfriend embarks on his first year of medical school, she is taking the next step in furthering her education. Katherine admits that this first year with adjusting to her boyfriend being a med student has been challenging. She works evenings and he is often asleep by the time she gets home and then already at school when she wakes up.
But we make it work. She is so thankful that there was an orientation seminar for new students entering into John A. Some of the best advice they gave to incoming med students was to pick a duration of time during the week that you devote to each other. This goes for both parties or family members. We typically make a big breakfast, go to the beach or on a hike, and reconvene in the evening to cook dinner and watch a movie.
That time together allows you both to recharge after your busy and largely independent workweeks. Her advice to combat this is to never let yourself believe that just because your partner is pursuing a career as an MD that you and your career are in some way of lesser value. This is the same even if your partner is going to law school or any other type of graduate school.

Every student and program across the country has been impacted by the current Covid pandemic. We recognize the disparities created for students due to the pandemic impact in their local community. Based on the recommendation by the Coalition for Physician Accountability, we made the difficult decision to not host sub-interns this academic year The decision was not made lightly.
We know this negatively impacts students who desired to rotate with us to get to know our program, faculty and residents. We want to prioritize keeping students safe and our commitment to an equitable recruitment season. Due to the desire to not worsen disparities for students or programs during the pandemic, we will be hosting virtual interviews this season.
Applicants will be invited for interviews on Tuesday November 10th. If we do not hear back from an applicant after 48 hours, we will offer that interview spot to another applicant. We plan to interview November 19, through January Our specific dates are being finalized in conjunction with other programs at our institution. Traditionally, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Kaiser Oakland sponsors a one-month clinical sub-internship for two fourth-year medical student each month from August through January of each academic year.
We are aware that student schedules may be on different tracks and the start date has a small amount of flexibility.

A medical school is a tertiary educational institution, or part of such an institution, that teaches medicine , and awards a professional degree for physicians and surgeons. Many medical schools offer additional degrees, such as a Doctor of Philosophy Ph. D , Master’s degree M. Sc , a physician assistant program, or other post-secondary education.
Medical schools can also carry out medical research and operate teaching hospitals. Around the world, criteria, structure, teaching methodology, and nature of medical programs offered at medical schools vary considerably. Medical schools are often highly competitive, using standardized entrance examinations , as well as grade point average and leadership roles, to narrow the selection criteria for candidates. In most countries, the study of medicine is completed as an undergraduate degree not requiring prerequisite undergraduate coursework.
However, an increasing number of places are emerging for graduate entrants who have completed an undergraduate degree including some required courses. In the United States and Canada, almost all medical degrees are second entry degrees , and require several years of previous study at the university level. Medical degrees are awarded to medical students after the completion of their degree program, which typically lasts five or more years for the undergraduate model and four years for the graduate model.
Many modern medical schools integrate clinical education with basic sciences from the beginning of the curriculum e. More traditional curricula are usually divided into preclinical and clinical blocks. In preclinical sciences, students study subjects such as biochemistry , genetics , pharmacology , pathology , anatomy , physiology and medical microbiology , among others.

Edited Feb 11, by Joe V. Jules A, MSN. Feb 10, So I have a few nurse friends who actually married a Doc but my experience wasn’t positive. I was engaged to a Fellow before I was in the health care industry. Other than the excellent parties and pharm trips, yeah that long ago, it was not a good experience for me. I was taken by how bright he was but for some reason he felt it necessary to fool around with multiple nurses. Once I figured it out I sent him packing.
Interestingly enough he didn’t take the nurses to any of the functions and he ended up marrying another physician-which didn’t last either. If you are young and have your head on straight I’d say go for it, just keep your eyes open. It was 30 years ago but the hours were horrid.
